Long day, but a good one. It started with me getting up nice and early to catch the train into Chicago. I actually walked down to the station in a light snow that was trying with middling success to stick. The train got into our town a few minutes early and reached Chicago on time. Instead of the usual taxi, I took the El up to the hotel where queenmomcat was waiting for me. It wasn't a bad ride, although this trip I only had one small bag with me. Were it a longer trip with more luggage, I would have taken the taxi.
Anyways, after going out for a very good lunch, we repaired to the hotel, where I slept away most of the afternoon. The last few days have been more than a little exhausting, and I know we're only just gearing up for the holiday season. This month and next are going to be filled with long naps, I can tell right now.
In the evening, we went out to the opera, which was the main reason for this trip. Tonight's performance was Wozzeck, and it was very interesting. For a change, I really noticed the set design, which was clever and used moving props and stage-wide curtains to do the thirteen scene changes the opera requires in about an hour and a half. The music isn't the most hummable, but it was still very effective. (I don't have this opera on CD myself, so I can't really do any comparisons for how the orchestra did, but it seemed like a good performance of a difficult work.)
Since Wozzeck is so short, we were able to get dinner at a restaurant across the street from the hotel instead of hunting up someplace open very late. (We actually do have a chosen restaurant for very late nights, but queenmomcat had brunch there yesterday, so we decided to try somewhere else for dinner.)
After dinner, we came straight back to the hotel, and in a moment, we'll be headed off to bed. As I said, it's been a long day and we're both tired. Tomorrow we'll head back home, but not before puttering about Chicago a bit.
