Up early to catch a train into Chicago for an opera day. The train was on time leaving our little town and arrived into Union Station only ten minutes late. That gave us time to head up to Wicker Park for books and lunch. I actually didn't see any books I wanted at the one book store we visited, but that's neither here nor there. I'm at a point now where book shopping is a hit or miss affair, given how many books I already own. Lunch was at a bar/restaurant that we tired the last time we were here -- when queenmomcat was sick with erysipelas. We decided to give it a second try with both of us feeling healthy, and the food was okay, but I don't think it will be a destination restaurant for us.
Anyways, we took the El back to the Loop and walked over to the Civic Opera House. We made a quick stop on the way to get some sandwiches for our dinner on the train ride back home, but even with that we were early enough to attend the little pre-opera lecture. The opera for today was The Merry Widow, which is pretty much fluff, but enjoyable fluff. We enjoyed this performance better than the one we say a few years back, in no small parts because the leads (Thomas Hampson and Renée Fleming) were much more charismatic than the leads the last time around. I was somewhat dubious going in about the fact that the opera was performed entirely in English, but it turns out I can live with that.
After the performance, we had plenty of time to get to the train station for our return trip. The train back to Michigan was nearly deserted, at least for the car going to our stop and the next stop up the line. Still, we made it in on time and came back home to a quiet house and two needy cats. It looks like a late bedtime is in store for tonight, which is fine, as I have tomorrow morning and early afternoon off and can sleep late. And that is exactly what I plan to do.
